Sailor Moon (Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Naoko Takeuchi, originally serialized in Nakayoshi magazine from 1991 to 1997. The story follows Usagi Tsukino, a clumsy middle-school girl who discovers she is the reincarnation of a moon princess and the leader of the Sailor Guardians — a team of magical girl warriors charged with protecting Earth from forces of evil. Joined by her fellow guardians and her past-life love Tuxedo Mask, Usagi battles the Dark Kingdom, the Black Moon Clan, the Death Busters, the Dead Moon Circus, and Shadow Galactica across five major story arcs. The franchise has been adapted into the original 1990s anime by Toei Animation, the more manga-faithful Sailor Moon Crystal series, multiple theatrical films including the Sailor Moon Eternal and Sailor Moon Cosmos film duologies, live-action adaptations, musicals, and one of the longest-running merchandise lineups in anime history.
